Pretoria - The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) notes with sadness the passing of former ICASA Councillor, Ms Julia Hope, on 22 December 2025. Ms Hope was a qualified engineer by profession and dedicated part of her career to the broadcasting and telecommunication sectors.
Ms Hope was part of the first cohort of Councillors appointed to the newly established ICASA in 2000, following the merger of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) and the South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (SATRA). Ms Hope served during a formative and defining period in the Authority’s history, helping to lay the foundation for an independent regulator whose ethos remains to regulate the sector in the public interest.
“As ICASA marks 25 years of existence, we acknowledge the contributions made by Ms Hope, who was among the pioneers that gave meaning to ICASA’s constitutional mandate and helped anchor its independence and service to the people of South Africa.” Mothibi Ramusi, Chairperson of ICASA
ICASA wishes to extend its condolences to Ms Hope’s family, friends and former colleagues. Her service and commitment will remain a part of ICASA’s story.
