Public hearings in respect of the Discussion Document on the Optimisation of FM Sound Broadcasting

PRETORIA - The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (“the Authority”) will hold virtual public hearings in respect of the discussion document on the optimisation of the frequency modulation sound broadcasting.

Frequency optimisation is a technique for increasing the frequency coverage area for FM radio stations, for improving signal quality and for avoiding interference between stations. The primary goal of this optimisation process is to make efficient use of the VHF 87.5-108 MHz ("FM") band for analogue sound broadcasting, as well as to assign new frequencies to meet the growing demand for additional frequencies.

“The successful optimisation of frequency modulation sound broadcasting will improve social cohesion, diversity, and plurality of views by increasing the amount of spectrum available for the triple tiers of broadcasting  -  namely public, commercial, and community broadcasting  -  in the near future,” said Cllr Peter Zimri.

The public hearings will take place virtually on 28 July 2022.

Interested stakeholders, media, and members of the public are invited to attend.
