ICASA conducts a final public workshop in respect of licensing applications for community radio services

Pretoria – The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa ("ICASA/the Authority") will host a final virtual public workshop in relation to the Invitation To Pre-Register (ITP-R) published on 15 December 2021. The workshop follows the re-opening of the licensing process for community radio broadcasting services and related radio frequency spectrum across the country.

The virtual workshop will be held on 9 June 2022, from 10H00 to 14H00, to unpack the requirements of the ITP-R, and assist communities in having a full understanding of the requirements thereof.

“In this regard, we are providing the last window of opportunity (as we did on 8 December 2021 and 16 - 17 February 2022) for the communities to have full comprehension of the regulations, requirements and the ITP-R itself. We are doing this because we want to make sure that those who will be making submissions have a clear picture of what is contained in all the regulatory documents; and that will also make our job easier when analysing the submissions,” says ICASA Councillor, Adv. Luthando Mkumatela.

Communities are therefore urged to familiarise themselves with how the community broadcasting environment works; to read the ITP-R and the Community Broadcasting Services Regulations. The closing date for applications remains 30 June 2022.

ICASA is committed to ensuring that interested communities are awarded licences that will see aspiring broadcast media individuals fully empowered and the views, culture and beliefs of those communities shared across the country.
