The SABC set to appear before the Complaints and Compliance Committee on allegations of non-compliance with Regulations

Johannesburg – The Complaints and Compliance Committee (CCC) will hold public hearings in respect of a complaint lodged by Support Public Broadcasting Coalition and Media Monitoring Africa against the SABC. The public hearings shall be held at ICASA Head Office in Sandton on 28 September 2018 at 11h00.

The complaint relates to allegations of contravention of Regulation 5.9 of the Sponsorship Regulations where it is alleged that an interview featuring the then Minister of Social Development was broadcast on Real Talk with Anele on SABC 3 without the broadcaster indicating the nature of the sponsor’s association with the programme.

“Regulation 5.9 of the Sponsorship Regulations which provides that in cases of program sponsorship, the broadcaster shall before and after the transmission, state the nature of the sponsor’s association with the programme,” says ICASA Councillor, Dr Keabetswe Modimoeng.

The recommendation of the CCC and the ultimate decision of ICASA will provide clarity and the distinction between Programme Sponsorship vis a vis the broadcast of Political Advertisements (PAs) and/or Party Election Broadcasts (PEBs) in view of the upcoming national elections.
