Pretoria – The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa joins the global broadcasting community in commemorating World Radio Day, observed annually on 13 February. This year, World Radio Day is celebrated under the theme “Radio and Artificial Intelligence,” which highlights the evolving relationship between traditional broadcasting and emerging technologies.
Despite ongoing technological advancements and the growth of digital platforms, radio continues to adapt and remain relevant and South Africa’s radio sector remains vibrant and diverse. To date, ICASA has licensed 18 public sound broadcasting services, 26 commercial sound broadcasting services, and 206 community broadcasting service licences, reflecting the continued relevance of radio within the country’s media ecosystem.
The provincial distribution of community broadcasting service licences demonstrates the extensive reach of community radio across the country: Gauteng (38), Limpopo (29), Western Cape (28), KwaZulu-Natal (27), Eastern Cape (25), Mpumalanga (23), North West (18), Northern Cape (10), and Free State (8).
“ICASA is mandated to regulate broadcasting services in the public interest, promote diversity of views, ensure equitable access to broadcasting services, and support the sustainability of community broadcasting. The Act recognises broadcasting as a key enabler of freedom of expression, access to information and democratic participation. As the country marks World Radio Day, ICASA reaffirms its commitment to creating a fair, inclusive and diverse broadcasting environment that enables radio services to continue serving the social, cultural and informational needs of all South Africans”, Said ICASA Chairperson, Mothibi Ramusi.
