ICASA invites all aspirant community television broadcasters to pre-register their licence applications

Pretoria – The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa ("ICASA/the Authority") hereby announces the nationwide re-opening of the licensing process for community television broadcasting services and related radio frequency spectrum licences.

The Invitation to Pre-Register (ITP-R) was published on 30 June 2022 and can be downloaded from https://www.icasa.org.za/pages/community-tv-broadcasting-licences. The closing date for applications is 12 January 2023 at 16h30.

Geographic communities and communities of interest are encouraged to foster and support applications to provide valuable community broadcasting services relevant to their needs. They are therefore encouraged to study the ITP-R, the Community Broadcasting Services Regulations 2019 (Government Gazette No. 42323), and other relevant regulations listed in the ITP-R.

The Authority will conduct workshops to unpack fully the requirements of the ITP-R, and to assist communities to have a full understanding of its requirements. The dates for these proposed workshops will be communicated in due course.

ICASA also notes that the 30th of June 2022 marked the closing date for the receipt of applications for the licensing process for community sound broadcasting services and related radio frequency spectrum licences.

“We would like to thank all stakeholders who made submissions, and we look forward to reviewing all applications received.” says Adv. Luthando Mkumatela, ICASA Councillor.

ICASA is committed to ensuring that interested communities are awarded licences that will see such communities and their aspiring broadcast media service providers fully empowered, and that the various local platforms reflect the issues and views, cultures, and beliefs of various communities across the country.
