ICASA takes its National Consumer Education Drive to Kagiso community

Johannesburg: In celebration of World Telecommunications and Information Society Month, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) is taking its national consumer education campaign to the Kagiso community in Gauteng on Friday, 25 May 2018.

The consumer educational campaign on Friday, 25 May will provide two opportunities for the Kagiso community and surrounding areas to participate.  A panel discussion of stakeholders and the community members will take place at 11:00am at the Chief Mogale Multi-purpose centre and an interactive event will be held at the Kagiso Mall from 12:00 am. The edutainment initiative is a fun and interactive way to reach out to communities which will provide entertainment and opportunities to win prizes for participation.

The Kagiso public education and awareness campaign follows off the back of the successful launch of this initiative in March in Soshanguve, Pretoria.

“ICASA has been holding hearings on the review of one of the pro-consumer regulations around data services and recently announced the finalisation of its End-User and Subscriber Service Charter regulations. The regulation’s objective is to develop minimum standards in respect of the provision of data, SMS, and voice services. We want citizens to know their rights when it comes to data services and that they can preserve their data by rolling it over or transferring it to an immediate family member on the same network,” says ICASA’s spokesperson Paseka Maleka.

Maleka further encouraged people to come out in numbers to share their concerns and hear the latest developments. “There are a number of public consultations currently taking place not only about data services but also about the review of regulations governing the community broadcasting sector as well as discussions around the state of subscription television broadcasting services which all affect people and their daily lives. These engagements present individuals, civil society organisation and any interested parties with the platform to raise and have their questions and concerns about the sector be fully addressed,” Maleka concluded.

The national consumer campaign aims to reach a greater number of people whilst delivering on ICASA’s mandate which requires it to regulate in the interest of South African consumers, educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities and protect consumers against harmful business practices.
